LITTLE ROCK - The American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest physician organization, announced the re-election of Arkansas radiologist Scott Ferguson, MD, to its Board of Trustees.

"It is an honor and privilege to be re-elected to the AMA Board of Trustees by my peers in medicine,” said Dr. Ferguson. “I have spent my career fighting to preserve physician choice, autonomy, patient protections, and the patient-physician relationship. As Trustees, we are advocates for the AMA House of Delegates, our medical profession, and especially for our patients. I look forward to continuing to learn, listen, and lead at this critical time for medicine and our health system.”

Prior to his election to the Board of Trustees in 2018, Dr. Ferguson served as president of both the Arkansas Medical Society and the Crittenden County Medical Association, and a state delegate to the AMA from Arkansas. Dr. Ferguson is a former chair of the AMA Council on Legislation (COL) and served on COL for eight years. He was also chairman of the FDA National Mammography Quality Advisory Committee.

As a member of the state legislature in Arkansas for two terms, Dr Ferguson was a driving force for physicians and patients, working on landmark legislation including “any willing provider,” the comprehensive children’s health care program (CHIP), childhood vaccinations/immunizations, and enhanced medical care for pregnant women, newborns and mastectomy patients.

Since leaving the state legislature, Dr. Ferguson has continued to spearhead efforts for tort reform, network adequacy, and expansion of health care coverage and telehealth. While serving on the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine Admissions Committee, Dr. Ferguson was a champion for medical education, working in and out of government to achieve additional residency slots in Arkansas.

A practicing radiologist in West Memphis, Arkansas Dr. Ferguson is a fellow of the American College of Radiology. He received the Distinguished Service Award from his state radiological society.

Dr. Ferguson’s and his wife, Deborah, have three children: Catherine, an emergency medicine physician in California, Scott, a software engineer in California, and Caroline, a PhD graduate of Stanford University living in Austin, Texas.
