Patients over Profits: Preserving Your Right to Essential Care
By WILLIAM G. JONES, MD, Market President, CHI St. Vincent
In our community, access to quality healthcare is not merely a service—it is a lifeline. For generations, CHI St. Vincent has stood as a pillar of this state, providing the specialized medical expertise and the safety net that our neighbors rely on to survive and thrive. However, thousands of Arkansans have lost access to CHI St. Vincent’s unique, life-saving services, care that simply cannot be found elsewhere.
CHI St. Vincent is currently out-of-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Arkansas. This disruption is not a mere administrative inconvenience; it is a fundamental threat to the health of our community. When insurance companies serve as barriers, patients lose access to the specialized care that defines CHI St. Vincent’s mission.
This specialized care includes the state’s most advanced neuroscience program, where world-renowned neurosurgeons treat patients with complex brain tumors and life-altering neurological conditions. It includes the largest heart surgery provider in Arkansas—recognized by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for outstanding outcomes and named a Top 50 U.S. Hospital for Cardiovascular Care. It includes the only Labor and Delivery unit in Southwest Arkansas and the only Pancreatic Disease Center of Excellence within 400 miles.
Perhaps most concerning is the impact on our most vulnerable. CHI St. Vincent serves as a critical rural primary care lifeline, reaching into communities where patients have no other options.
We handle more than 8,000 patient transfers each year—individuals coming from facilities that lack the specialized equipment and expertise required to treat their acute, life-threatening conditions. By restricting access, BCBS is closing the door on the patients who need this high-level care the most.
When insurance companies and healthcare providers fail to reach an agreement, the burden falls squarely on the shoulders of the patient—the heart surgery candidate, the expectant mother, and the patient suffering from a devastating cancer diagnosis who has nowhere else to turn.
Everyone in our community deserves consistent, reliable access to the specialized services CHI St. Vincent provides. This hospital is more than a building; it is a collection of nurses, surgeons, and support staff dedicated to our mission to improve the health of our community. They cannot fulfill that mission if they are blocked by insurance policies that prioritize the bottom line over the patient’s ability to receive expert care.
It is time for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arkansas to return to the table with a genuine commitment to a fair and sustainable agreement. Let us ensure that CHI St. Vincent remains accessible to everyone who needs it, because when it comes to the specialized, life-saving care our community depends on, nothing is more important.
