Symposium to Address Mental Health Conditions, Medicare/Medicaid
Symposium to Address Mental Health Conditions, Medicare/Medicaid

Commissioner Virginia Trotter Betts of the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities
A diverse panel of experts will discuss trends in treating people with mental health conditions during a seminar Sept. 23 in Little Rock.

Windsor Medicare Extra of Brentwood, Tenn., is hosting the Behavioral Health Symposium, “Integrating Mental and Medical Health Services.”

Keynote speaker will be Jay Bradford, director of the Division of Behavioral Health Services, Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services. Jay Harrington, vice president of Special Needs Plans for Windsor Medicare Extra, will also present information on integrated care for Medicare beneficiaries.

“We actually held an extremely successful symposium in Knoxville, Tenn., in April of this year,” Harrington said. “The Tennessee symposium was so well received that we felt it was timely enough to bring to the other markets we serve.”

Harrington said that his company feels that there is finally recognition in the healthcare community about the treatment for mental health conditions, “whereas before there seems to have been a disconnect between mental health services and physical health services. We believe that because they are so closely related, it is important to treat the entire person, mind and body, as a treatment model.”

Medicare and Medicaid providers often treat people with mental health issues, Harrington said.

“People that are eligible for Medicaid often times do not have the resources to coordinate health care especially for mental health care,” he said. “Windsor Medicare Extra offers a special needs plan specifically designed to address the health concerns of those with Medicare, Medicaid and mental health conditions. We are one of only two providers contracted with the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid licensed to provide these services to this often underserved population.”

The seminar is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about the incorporation of medical and mental health services. Seating is limited, so reservations are recommended.
