Malik Receives Grant
With $143,000 in grant money from the American Heart Association, Arkansas Children's Hospital Research Institute investigator Dr. Sadia Malik, MD, hopes to find genetic information that will enable researchers to establish a birth defects prevention program that potential parents could use before a baby's conception. Malik also is an assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine. The funds from her grant will be split over a two-year period that began Jan.1, 2007 and runs through the end of 2008. Malik will use new genomic tools provided by the Human Genome Project and the International HapMap Project to look at whether genetic variations in the way mothers metabolize tobacco could cause an increase in their risk of bearing an infant with congenital heart defects.
