CONWAY – Conway Regional Medical Center has become the first and only medical center in central Arkansas to perform the Medtronic Symplicity™ blood pressure procedure, a new treatment option for patients with uncontrolled hypertension. The inaugural procedure was successfully performed by Don Steely, MD.

The Symplicity Spyral™ renal denervation (RDN) system, also known as the Symplicity blood pressure procedure, is a minimally invasive procedure that targets overactive nerves near the kidneys that can contribute to high blood pressure. During the procedure, a physician inserts a thin tube into the artery leading to the kidney and delivers radiofrequency energy to calm excessive nerve activity. No implant is left behind.

“High blood pressure affects more than 1 billion people worldwide and often goes undetected,” said Don Steely, MD, interventional cardiologist at Conway Regional. “For patients whose hypertension cannot be controlled by medication and lifestyle changes alone, this procedure provides a new and proven option to help lower blood pressure and reduce long-term health risks.”
