LITTLE ROCK — The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has welcomed orthopaedic spine surgeon Mark Feger, M.D., Ph.D., and sports medicine physician Hamilton Newhart, M.D.
In addition to treating patients, both Feger and Newhart are assistant professors in the UAMS College of Medicine’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation.

Mark Feger, MD, PhD
Feger is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon who specializes in the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of a wide spectrum of spinal conditions and injuries, including common back and neck pain and complex spinal disorders and deformities like scoliosis. He leverages the latest technologies and advancements, including minimally invasive surgery, endoscopic spinal surgery and robotic guidance, to deliver high-quality spine care that enables patients to live healthier, pain-free lives.
Feger attended Albion College in Albion, Michigan, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology – Athletic Training. He then earned a Master of Education in Kinesiology – Athletic Training and a Doctor of Philosophy in Kinesiology – Sports Medicine at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education in Charlottesville.
He then received his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, graduating as class valedictorian and earning numerous accolades for his exceptional academic performance. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis and further honed his expertise through a fellowship in spine surgery at Emory University in Atlanta.
Feger’s research has led to more than 35 peer-reviewed publications, 30 presentations, and several book chapters. He also actively serves as a manuscript reviewer for various journals and is a proud member of national AO spine lumbar and cervical knowledge forums.

Hamilton Newhart, MD
Newhart is a board-certified, fellowship-trained sports medicine physician who provides comprehensive care for sports-related and other musculoskeletal injuries to help restore movement, improve function, optimize performance and reduce the risk of reinjury. He treats athletes and patients of all skill levels. His care includes treatment for everything from sprains and strains to broken bones and arthritis.
An Arkansas native, Newhart graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Central Arkansas, where he was awarded a four-year distinguished scholarship. He earned his medical degree from UAMS, graduating with honors in research. He completed his internship and residency at the Baptist Health/UAMS Family Medicine program in North Little Rock, where he was recognized as its Most Outstanding Resident in 2024. That year, he also received the Best Resident Award from the Arkansas Medical Society.
After his residency, Newhart completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Henry Ford Health in Detroit. As part of his training, he worked with many of the city’s professional sports teams including the Detroit Lions, the Detroit Pistons and its NBA G League affiliate Motor City Cruise, as well as the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings. He also served as the head team physician for Dearborn High School and provided sports medicine coverage for Oakland University, Wayne State University and Lawrence Technological University.
