The look of midtown Little Rock is about to change with two major construction projects on facing corners at the intersection of Markham and University.
On the northeast corner, a new shopping center is going up. Across the street, St. Vincent will construct a $40 million hospital expansion project.
The project calls for a four-level facility with a modern glass facade, and will house a 19,000-square-feet emergency department, nearly doubling the existing space.
Dr. David Hall, chief medical officer for the hospital, said that $10 million will be spent for the new space and that "the current emergency facility will be relocated to a newly constructed space specifically designed to accommodate additional capacity and provide state-of-the-art emergent care services."
The building will, among other things, feature a unique drive-through ambulance bay, Hall said.
The project is the largest undertaken at St. Vincent since 1978. "It's an exciting time for us," said interim chief executive officer Ken Haynes.
The project calls for more than just a new emergency department. Also planned are upgrades to patient rooms and changes to the Jack Stephens Heart Center, with a new cardiovascular intensive care unit. The orthopedic center will feature two new surgical suites and four additional general surgical suites.
The Hammes Company of Wisconsin is responsible for the architectural engineering, design review, construction bidding and approvals. The groundbreaking is scheduled for early next year and the new emergency department is scheduled for completion by June 2008. The remaining construction project should be finished by June 2009.
