These days, an ongoing project that's close to the heart of Jerry Stewart, MD, involves taking time to improve his photography skills and organize decades of family photographs and family history for his children and grandchildren. Fortunately, the Stewarts' three children and five grandchildren reside nearby. "They all considered living and working elsewhere, but came to Fort Smith to live, work and as they like to tell me," he joked, "be sure I get a good nursing home."
Stewart, who celebrates his 73rd birthday on Nov. 12, enthusiastically described his children:
- Laura Hood owns and operates Argo Medical Supplies in Fort Smith with her husband, Bret. Their children are Zach, 17, Kendall, 15, and Grant, 13.
- Daniel, an attorney in Fort Smith who previously worked as a public defender in the prosecutor's office and as a district judge, "is single," he emphasized, at Sandy's and Laura's requests.
- Todd, a general internist in Fort Smith, is married to Casey, a pediatrician with River Valley Primary Care at the Northside Clinic in Fort Smith. Their children are Jackson, 7, and Ben, 5.
At home, Stewart loves to tune into old westerns and listen to southern gospel music with his wife of 43 years, Sandy, whom he describes as "a wonderful partner, wife, mother and homemaker." They often ride horses together, as they did on a recent adventure in Jackson, Wyoming.
Despite the constant presence of grandchildren, "the boss of our household," Stewart pointed out, "is a little white Coton' dog named Nike."
