Access, Risk Factors Inflate Arkansas’ Stroke Mortality Rates Medical researchers have known for decades that Arkansas and other members of the Stroke Belt have higher-than-average mortality rates. The question is, why?
“It’s a great mystery, and we really don’t know what’s causing it,” admitted Dr. George Howard, chair of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Health’s Department of Biostatics. “I’m fond of saying, ‘We all know what causes it. We just all disagree with each other.’” TED GRIGGS |

| Sparks RMC Renaissance Building Signifies System’s Rebirth Deep in the Arkansas Bible Belt, Sparks Regional Medical Center is looking to become a born-again health system. The physical manifestation of that rebirth is its newly opened Renaissance Building, a $40.4 million expansion on which many of the health system’s hopes for the future are riding. JENNIFER BOULDEN |
The Importance of the “F-Word”—Fiduciary Financial planning is still an emerging profession much like medicine was during the 19th century. Back then, it was difficult to distinguish between Doc Adams on “Gunsmoke” and Medicine Man from “The Wizard of Oz” (a.k.a. “the Wizard”). Yet, there was a huge difference. One took care of his patients; the other looked after his own self-interest with no ultimate concern for those he purportedly served. RICK ADKINS |
Financial Planning for Physicians Remember during “Star Trek” episodes when Spock would raise his hand, separate his fingers and wish his colleagues an “uneventful trip”? Physicians should set that same goal for themselves when planning their financial future.
That’s the advice of Michigan-based Paul H. Sutherland, president, founder and CIO of Financial & Investment Management Group and manager of Utopia Funds. Sutherland is the author of Physicians’ Guide to Financial Planning, published this year by the American Medical Association. SHARON H. FITZGERALD |

| New Outpatient Programs Helping Arkansas Opioid Addicts In recent months, U.S. officials have begun paying close attention to the rise in abuse of buprenorphine, the prescription drug that has been considered by many to be a major breakthrough in the treatment of opiate addiction. Most commonly sold as SuboxoneTM, buprenorphine has been slow to take hold in Arkansas. JENNIFER BOULDEN |
Physician Spotlight: Dr. Rebecca Fleck Until the moment she was asked, the last thing Dr. Rebecca Fleck wanted was to become an administrator.
In July, Fleck, a hematologist and hematopathologist at Cooper Clinic in Fort Smith, became the physician group’s first chief medical officer (CMO). Cooper Clinic is one of the largest physician-owned multi-specialty clinics in the state, with more than 100 physicians in private practice and serving St. Edward Mercy Medical Center. Fleck worked at St. Edward’s Hembree Regional Cancer Center. JENNIFER BOULDEN |

| Stopping Strokes An Aggressive Push for Primary and Secondary Prevention We all know the stats. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in America and the number one cause of disability. The southeastern United States is known as “The Stroke Belt.” Approximately 780,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year — on average, that’s one stroke every 45 seconds. About every three minutes, someone dies of stroke. In 2008, it is estimated that the direct and indirect cost of stroke will be $65.5 billion. CINDY SANDERS |
