Legislators, Doctors Prepping for Flu Pandemic
As Sen. Mark Pryor said when chairing a U.S. Senate hearing in October, “Pandemic Influenza: State and Local Efforts to Prepare,” to most people the idea of a pandemic flu outbreak is somewhat abstract. “Most of what we’ve seen in the media so far portrays bird flu as an animal disease, not a human one,” Pryor said. “It usually breaks out in countries on the other side of the world. Nonetheless, the disease is worrying. To date, 329 people have contracted avian flu. Two hundred and one of them have died. That’s a 61 percent death rate.”

Physician Spotlight: Dr. Harry Harmon
The year’s not going badly for Dr. Harry Harmon. In February, the Rogers pediatrician received a successful stem cell transplant for the non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma he’s had since 2000. This summer he returned to work in his Rogers pediatric practice of 33 years and he and his wife Jenny celebrated the birth of their first grandchild. Then in October he received a Congressional honor in Washington, D.C. for his extensive work over the years with the Arkansas adoption community.

U.S. Senate Bill Proposes VA Mental Health Contracts
In all 75 Arkansas counties, community mental health centers are on alert. Depending on what happens with a bill currently in the federal pipeline, the Veterans Administration may soon be outsourcing mental health care for Iraq war veterans with many of these centers.
